This psychological type carries with them a fresh, uncomplicated view of their world. Guided by introverted feeling and extraverted sensing, they live intensely in the present moment.

Gifted with great spontaneity, they move through life as if each experience is a new discovery, and their primary goal is to be in harmony with it.

This type understands the external world thanks to sensory abilities so finely tuned that they can strongly identify with nature. Almost all members of this category have a special gift for communicating with children or animals, and they are also very likely to love being outdoors and surrounded by greenery.

Sometimes, animals hide pain and illness because showing weakness makes them vulnerable to predators, but this psychological type knows what to look for and treats all creatures with a deep respect for their dignity.

Every time this sensitivity comes into play in the social sphere, this type feels like they have a mission to fulfill and will always be engaged in fighting cruelty.

Like all types who use the sensing function to face the external world, this type learns from experience, and to really understand something, they need direct contact. But unlike extraverted sensing types, they don’t need constant sensory novelty to stay interested. When their Judging function is activated, they reveal themselves as focused, controlled, and practically tireless. Whether they are athletes, artists, engaged in paramedical or nursing activities, making music, or caring for abandoned animals, they see their work as a calling rather than just a profession.

Their commitment, however, has nothing to do with goal-oriented judgment; they think in terms of values — of what is right in the present situation. They lose sight of themselves as an object, rushing in where even angels might fear to tread.

When engaged in an activity that truly captures them, they give their all, without ever trying to overdo it. They simply are this way; they don’t want to think too much about the objective conditions of their work but want a space that allows them to do what they feel called to do.

This type tends to attract extroverted thinking types, who, being firmly rooted in the world of established institutions, help them stay aware of objective responsibilities. Not that they actively seek this kind of relationship; rather, they do nothing to prevent it, allowing the other to take on the problem of material stability — though they don’t disdain the criteria of social organization, they simply don’t give them too much importance.

Although affectionate, generous, and able to form deep connections with others, this type is cautious about major attachments and takes a careful attitude toward property and material possessions: they want to see beyond the objects that serve their talents and ambitions, getting lost in the creative act itself.

This type may also engage in disciplines aimed at freeing themselves from material dependence — they don’t want to be prisoners of what they own. Indeed, when they rely too much on the dominant function, property and material obligations make them feel constrained. Their inferior function, extraverted thinking, is too far removed from their conscious goals. When they encounter a situation they cannot handle with their dominant resources, extraverted thinking presses in with a strong unconscious influence, and they lose touch with the sense of values that are normally familiar to them.

This is what normally happens when a primary function becomes too strong. The psyche distances us from our habitual behaviors, giving us space to develop other potentials. When this occurs, this psychological type simply feels they are losing touch with their deepest self, and the only way they know to resolve the problem is to reject any stimulus that doesn’t help maintain that contact.

The frustration thus drives them to use their secondary function defensively, that is, to assert their existential freedom. Their dedication to a calling comes hand in hand with an equally strong need to demonstrate that their objective self isn’t all that important. This type will do anything to remain aware of the creative force within, without worrying much about logical consequences. In most cases, introverted intuition helps them believe that their way of seeing reality is important even when they cannot find a way to express it.

Jungian analyst Ann Ulanov describes this situation in an interesting way.

Ulanov said that living in contact with one’s inner world is a bit like living by the sea. Unless you can build an appropriate structure, there’s a risk of floods.

However, the first instinct is to build a house like those in the city — after all, that’s what others will help you do. But this is precisely the kind of house that, when the tide rises, will be destroyed. For a while, you think maybe you could have built it better, but gradually, you can do without others’ advice, and you start living without a rigid structure.

Why not try building a house that suits your real needs? A fisherman’s house, one that the water can wash over without knocking down? And when someone comes to visit, you warn them not to wear their best shoes, because during lunch, their feet might get wet.

This is essentially the main task facing this psychological type: to recognize their own needs for living, let’s say, close to the sea of their inner world. The secondary function will help them build a life that honors the gifts and genuine calling within them. It won’t push them to reject what they already have or know. It will stimulate them to understand why they are alive and discover what their true path is.

When this type is well developed, they live — if we can put it this way — between the sea and the city, doing what they need to do. For this reason, their creations, their choices, their way of being will remind people of important things the community has forgotten.

The jobs suited to this psychological type are those connected to preserving nature and animals: veterinarian, biologist, ecologist, forest ranger, renewable energy engineer. They may also work in caring for children, such as pediatrician, babysitter, or preschool educator. They can also express their creative side as a nature photographer, landscape architect, or by working on an educational farm.
