This psychological type is dominated by introverted thinking — a form of reasoning that operates based on immediate sensory information, able to instantly grasp the structural logic of a system or process. This type relates to the external world through extraverted intuition, and therefore, their need for direct experience is not always apparent.

They are interested in the logical possibilities of a structure — that is, how form and context interact and change each other. For this reason, when facing abstract reasoning, they almost never feel uncomfortable. However, to reason correctly, they need visual and tactile contact with the system in question. The primary method by which they explore different structural possibilities is almost always through drawing or modeling.

Because their attention is focused on possibilities, they are likely more interested in the idea animating a system and its consequences on reality than in the system’s objective utility.

Even if they develop excellent communication skills, in reality, they never talk about the same things that more rational, thinking types are interested in. On the other hand, since they consider logical implications in terms of systemic change over time, they are often far ahead of cultural evolutionary trends.

This psychological type approaches reality by using introverted thinking to grasp the sense of the structural model of a situation and then employs extraverted intuition to assess its consequences on reality. For example, long before concrete had even crossed an entrepreneur’s mind, architect Frank Lloyd Wright had already understood that prefabricated panels could be used to build highways, urban suburbs, and shopping malls.

Clearly, we all know that color, space, light, and order are elements that greatly affect our experience of a restaurant, a building project, or a government building — but generally, no one thinks about the internal logic behind their technical creations. Yet, it’s not unlikely that a designer of this psychological type might spend their whole life studying why Western culture so strongly prefers corners over ovals.

Because this psychological type represents only one percent of the population, they don’t find much understanding around them, and their interests risk being so rarefied that they feel isolated. This sense of isolation is worsened by the introverted nature of their mental processes. All types with introverted sensing systematically risk losing touch with objective reality in all areas outside their known knowledge and experience.

Typically, this type’s feelings don’t show in their behavior. In fact, it’s often difficult for them to know what they’re feeling until they lose control. Their ability to identify their own emotions and recognize their meaning is not highly developed.

For this reason, emotional relationships can be a problem. Generally, this type develops enough extraverted sensing to engage in experiences that draw on their primary resources, but they don’t fully grasp the objective image of themselves that they show to others. And since extraverted feeling is their least developed function, they are very shy when it comes to emotional bonds. It’s even possible they don’t know what they want from a partner. Their foresight is always directed toward impersonal projects: indeed, for them, the realm of personal relationships is essentially devoid of rational order.

They will therefore tend to marry someone with an identical psychological type or find themselves blinded by passion for people who compensate for their lack of extraverted feeling. But these passions usually don’t last long. They need a lot of time alone with their thoughts.

Moreover, they’re likely to give little weight or consider unnecessary the ritual expressions of affection and emotional conventions.

Almost all INRO types need to stay more in touch with the extraverted nature of their secondary function (i.e., intuition). In evaluating the logical probabilities of a system, they are accustomed to using only intuition.

They therefore need to make a conscious effort to apply it to themselves — that is, to see the effect they have on others in general or to consider possibilities outside the usual framework of their expectations. If this extraverted capacity is not practiced, this type remains entrenched in their dominant function, and their least conscious function drifts too far from the reach of their will and goals. Gradually, they will be overwhelmed by an unconscious desire for approval and appreciation, which jeopardizes their impersonal approach to life.

This internal drama is actually healthy for them. If they can distance themselves from their usual mental framework, they will be able to put their habitual behaviors in perspective. Like all types, however, they won’t view the unconscious tension as part of themselves but as something happening to them — a problem caused by the situation, by others. They might convince themselves, for example, that they’re not receiving all the appreciation they deserve.

Sometimes, in response, they’ll seek reassurance by turning to extraverted sensing, striving to cultivate a better self-image.

But the consequence of all this is that they reaffirm their usual identity centered on thinking, convincing themselves they’ve become too dependent on others’ opinions. Concerned that their needs be formally correct, they’ll do everything to become increasingly self-sufficient. The result is that they’ll withdraw more and more into themselves, becoming less willing to be accommodating to others or to step in and do what others don’t want to do.

When well-developed, introverted sensing helps us recognize the information that maintains constant meaning for us, independent of prevailing social assumptions.

Introverted sensing focuses this type’s defenses on issues of material well-being. They may become preoccupied that people could transmit diseases or with the harmful aspects of food or the environment, building up barriers to defend themselves.

This type will also spend considerable energy defending their personal ideas, not shying away from disputes and arguments.

If this type comes to terms with relationships through intuition, they will feel responsible toward those who share their same situation. They will develop a strong determination but will no longer feel the need to evaluate their behaviors solely in terms of logical probability. They will recognize the existence of the unpredictable and the improbable — that is, those aspects of life that require a leap of faith or the ability to trust someone else more than themselves.

The professions suited to this psychological type are project-based. These are the people who compose music, handle graphic design projects, conduct laboratory tests, design magazine layouts, develop architectural plans, and manage public contracts.
